Chandigarh, July 22: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has written to Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Surjeet Singh Deswal, expressing his appreciation for the huge cache of drugs seized by the personnel of the 10th Battalion in Gurdaspur sector.

The Chief Minister has recommended that all members of the BSF team involved in the seizure of 60 kg of heroin should be rewarded for their success.

“But for the alertness of the jawans and the prompt action thereafter, a huge cache of drugs would have entered the Indian market and severely impacted the lives of many Indians,” said the Chief Minister.

The exemplary action of the 14-member BSF party involved in the operation to save the nation’s youth from the clutches of drugs deserves to be commended, Captain Amarinder said. He pointed out that the gap at GIN-61 is tough, particularly during the night, as it is riverine and unfenced, but the BSF personnel not only displayed exceptional alertness but also risked their lives while battling the strong current in river Ravi.

On the intervening night of 18/19th July, 2020 at about 0245 hrs at GIN-61 under BOP Nangli, BSF Constable Birsa Murmu (No 070031243), who was part of the Boat Naka and positioned at a stone mound, spotted some suspicious items floating from the Pakistan side to the Indian side in river Ravi. He sounded the alert and the BSF personnel of 10 BN immediately swung into action and recovered 60 cloth packets, which were found to contain a total of 59.6 Kgs of Heroin. The value of the seized heroin is estimated at Rs. 300 crores.
