Flying Sikh Milkha Singh dies of Covid-19 complications at 91

Flying Sikh Milkha Singh passed away due to COVID related complications on late Friday night. He was 91.

Milkha Singh breathed his last at around11.30 pm in PGI, Chandigarh.

It is pertinent to mention here that, Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Milkha Singh had also passed away due to COVID on June 13.

Statement of Prof Ashok Kumar, official spokesman of PGI:

Legendary Indian Sprinter Shri Milkha Singh ji was admitted in the ICU of Covid Hospital of PGIMER  on 3rd June 2021 and was treated for Covid there till 13th June when after putting up a valiant battle with Covid,  Milkha Singh Ji tested negative. However, due to post- Covid complications,  he was shifted out of Covid Hospital to medical ICU.But despite best of the efforts by the medical team,  Milkha Singh ji could not be retrieved from his critical condition and  after a brave fight, he left for his heavenly abode  at 11.30 pm on 18th June 2021 here at PGIMER.

Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER expresses his deepest condolences on the sad demise of this ‘most revered’ sporting icon, who will be remembered for his exceptional accomplishments on and off the field and his endearing and humane personality.

Milkha Singh’s family has also conveyed their message after his death:

It is with extreme sadness that we would like to inform you that Milkha Singh Ji passed away at 11.30 pm. on the 18th of June 2021.
He fought hard but God has his ways and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmal ji and now Dad have passed away in a matter of 5 days. We are deeply indebted to the doctors at PGI for their valiant efforts and the love and prayers we received from across the world and from yourselves.

PM condoles sad demise of Sports Legend:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled sad demise of Milkha Singh. Modi said, ” In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation’s imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians. His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away.”
